History
A journey created by passion and sustained by dedication.
The history of the Coimbatore Golf Club is founded upon the passion that Mr. Rajagopal had for the game of golf. In the 1970’s golf was an unheard of game in Coimbatore save for a few hard core enthusiasts who braved the roads and the weather to motor out long before dawn to Ooty to play golf. In time and with increased traffic congestion, a thought started emerging about the need for a dedicated golf course at Coimbatore. Over many a late night meeting was hatched a plan of action to turn the dream of a golf course to the reality of a golf course.
In the interim land was leased from the Coimbatore Jail and a 9 hole course with browns incorporating a driving range was started. Mr. Simran Singh, a coach was also approached. He moved to Coimbatore and the number of people who started taking up the game started growing steadily.
Over many a meeting that ran into the wee hours, was hatched a plan of action to turn the dream of a golf course to the reality of a golf course. Limited financial resources, a sketchy knowledge of the principles of golf course construction, a small group of golfers, a locality that was very arid and boundless enthusiasm; These were the foundations of The Coimbatore Golf club. By convincing friends and family to support this dream, resources were created. A few dedicated friends learned golf course architecture by trial and error. Using limited means and endless dedication was born a golf course with 18 greens. This at a time when Ootacamund Gymkhana Club was the only golf course in South India with greens. To sustain the club, standards of conduct were laid that are true to the spirit of the game of golf. Resources were first utilised only for the golf course, even at the cost of having a simple clubhouse, which had atmosphere but little else. In time, a club house befitting the golf course was also built. The Coimbatore Golf Club today has emerged as a full fledged golfing facility with a top quality golf course, driving range with coaching facilities as well as a full featured clubhouse.
- CGC has always and will always promote the right way to play golf, not just to improve stroke making skills but playing the game the right way. It does not permit the use of mobile phones during play, an issue that was strongly emphasised by Mr. Rajagopal.
- The Coimbatore Golf Club is dedicated to preserving both the memory and the principles of its founder.
