He was interested in racing, flying, shooting, photography and shuttle before embarking upon the game of golf – his passion for more than 40 years of his life. Amongst other things K R was Chairman – Southern India Mills Association, Indian Cotton Mills Federation, Coimbatore Zoological Park, G Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Trust, President – Ootacamund Gymkhana Club, Coimbatore Golf Club, Indian Golf Union, Coimbatore Management Association; Hon Scribe – The Addicts Golfing Society of Southern India; Committee Member – FICCI and Trustee – PSG & Sons Charities.

Captain was introduced to the game while on a visit to meet his friend Mr Suresh T Kilachand at Kodaikanal during the year 1967 and having liked the game he continued to play Golf at Kodaikanal, Wellington and Ooty before he founded the Coimbatore Golf Club in 1977 with a 9 hole course situated in the Central Jail premises. His steely grit and vision ensured the creation of the 18 hole golf course at Chettipalayam. Captain became the father and patron deity of Golf in this part of the country. Besides playing active Golf, Captain played by the rules and the spirit of the game.

Team work, nurturing of junior talent, delegation of authority and responsibility while also lending a patient hearing epitomised the popular trait of K R for all his life. K R has traversed the course more than any other golfer and firmly believed that the development of infrastructure was a never ending process which was continuous and evolutionary. Development of the course has ensured the well being of the nearby community by enhancing the work opportunities and the value of the properties adjacent to the course. The development of Chettipalayam and its neighbourhood owes a great deal to the good work, toil and leadership abilities of K R.

The Golfer in Captain has won several trophies and accolades. On his 73rd Birthday he played 73 holes in a single day, a testament to his love for the game as well as his stamina. He has had 5 holes-in-one to his credit as well. He also won the Cleveland Golf Father and Son Classic held at Pebble Beach, USA by teaming up with his son R Gopinath during the year 2002. Captain’s dream of having a quality club house was achieved in the year 2010, months before the cruel fate of death snatched him on 16th January, 2011.

The spirit of Captain K Rajagopal will continue to guide and bestow parental care on the Coimbatore Golf Club during all time to come.
